Abdul Ghafoor (Saharsa politician)

Dr. Abdul Ghafoor: (Urdu: عبد الغفور‎) is a politician from the state of Bihar, India and is a current member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing the Mahishi vidhan sabha for the third time (he was elected in 1995,2000, and 2010).[1] His political party is Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD).

Early life and education

Dr. Abdul Ghafoor was born into a farmer's family in the village of Bauherwa in Saharsa district of Bihar. He finished his early education from Saharsa and moved to Patna for higher education. He is a professor and has an Honorary doctorate degree in Urdu.

Career

He first contested on a Janta dal ticket from Mahishi Vidhan sabha and defeated the veteran congress leader Lahtan Choudhary. In 1998 when the Janta Dal split to form Rashtriya janta Dal (RJD), he chose to be loyal to Lalu Prasad Yadav and joined RJD. He again won convincingly in the year 2000 from an RJD ticket by a huge margin of around 20,000 votes defeating Surendra yadav, an independent candidate. In the debacle and toppling of Lalu Yadav in 2005 election, he lost from Mahishi to Surendra yadav marginally. The assembly could not be formed due to clear mandate and the state was forced to go for fresh election. In the re-election he was asked to shift his constituency to Saharsa so that the he could pave way for Surendra yadav in to contest from Mahishi. Accepting the party decision he contested from Saharsa in Nov 2005 election but again had a hard luck with BJP's candidate and lost by around 6000 votes.

He worked hard and connected to the masses in the villages of him assembly Mahishi and was reluctant to bounce back into the Bihar politics. His dedication was rewarded and was given back his home constituency of Mahishi in 2010 elections which he did win and stamped his authority as one of the most powerful Muslim politicians of the state. Though Lalu Yadav's RJD was very badly defeated, he came victorious as the lone RJD candidate from the Koshi region.

He was also the chairman of Bihar State haj Committee and held the post for 5 years between 2000 and 2005.
