Early life

Raman Kalimuthu Murugesu was born in a poverty-stricken household on 26 October 1933. Since his family was so poor, he had to begin working as a labourer in the fields at the age of 12. It was at this time in his life that he was presented with a book of mantras for Lord Ganesha, given to him by a Mahatma. Murugesu started to chant regularly.

Creation of the Sri Lankatheeswara temple

Swamy Murugesu created the Sri Lankatheeswara temple in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. He had an ashram next to the temple and lived next to the ashram. There was also a block of sandy steps leading up to a big hall, where Murugesu conducted yagnas and did rituals for Poya day. In the temple there was a big Shivalingam, that would have an abishekam every month. Directly opposite was a black statue of the Goddess Gayathri.

Disciples

Many flocked to the ashram and became Murugesu's disciples. One of them was Swami Shankarananda.

Death

Murugesu became seriously ill in 2007 and went to India for treatment. He died on 24 September 2007. His samadhi is in the Gayathri Mandir of the Sri Lankatheeswara temple. However, the temple is still running and disciples are fundraising for a temple for 108 Sivalingams.

Quotation I call upon any seeker of truth, seeking spiritual guidance, to contact me direct. Let him come from any religion, nationality, language or walk of life, even the worst of sinners. He shall be initiated into the Gayathri, or cosmic mystic meditation, and guided along the Bhakti or Yoga path, to realise God in this birth itself. If he is from a far-off land, telepathic initiation is given, provided he is receptive.[cite this quote]
