Doolittle Massif

Doolittle Massif (80°52′S 158°19′E / 80.867°S 158.317°E / -80.867; 158.317) is a compact group of mountain heights in northwest Churchill Mountains between Zeller Glacier and Sefton Glacier where the glaciers enter the larger Byrd Glacier. The feature is 10 nautical miles (18 km) long and rises to 2050 m in Mount Rainbow. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after General James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle (1896–1993) United States Air Force (USAF), American aviator and hero who visited McMurdo Station in 1962. In 1942 then Lieutenant Colonel Doolittle imitated heavy aircraft operations from the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Hornet leading to carrier-based R4D operations from Philippine Sea during Operation Highjump.
