Diego Pasquale Haas (born April 16, 1988 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein) is a Liechtensteiner footballer. Haas is a versatile player who can play across the front line either up top or on both flanks. He has played for Liechtenstein at youth level and has played for the Under-21 national team.

Playing career

Early career

Haas began his football career in 1994 when he joined professional club FC Vaduz. He remained with Vaduz until 2003. He also played for various LFV youth teams, initially playing for the Under-12 side in 1999. He later went on to captain both the Under-15 and Under-18 sides. Haas finished playing youth football for the LFV in 2005, having progressed from Under-12 to Under-18 level. The youth clubs competed at the highest level in Swiss Youth Football.

Club career

After leaving the LFV youth setup, he joined FC Balzers in June of the same year. He played with FC Balzers from June 2005 until January 2008. He also had stints with FC Landquart-Herrschaft, FC Schaan, and had another stint with FC Landquart-Herrschaft in early 2010. Diego currently plays for the second team of USV Eschen/Mauren, whom he joined in July 2010. The second team currently plays in the Swiss Football League, in 4. Liga. He consistently put in impressive performances throughout the 2010-2011 season and USV Eschen/Mauren II challenged for promotion. The club ultimately finished in 2nd place in 4. Liga/Group 2. USV Eschen/Mauren II is now early favorites for promotion during the 2011-2012 season, playing in 4. Liga/Group 3.[2]

International career

Youth

During October 2003, Haas received a call up to participate in the Liechtenstein Under-17 team's European Championship campaign for qualifying matches in Group 6. These matches were played in Belgium. Haas played in 2 matches, making his debut in International competition against Belgium and also playing against Bosnia and Herzegovina.[3]

The following year, Diego was called up to the Under-19 squad. In early October 2004, Haas participated in the Leichenstein Under-19 team's European Championship campaign for qualifying matches in Group 10. These matches were played in Croatia. Haas played in all 3 matches during the qualification round, playing against Sweden, Croatia, and Slovakia.[4] Less than 2 weeks later, Haas participated in the Leichenstein Under-17 team's European Championship campaign for qualifying matches in Group 10. These matches were played in Northern Ireland. Haas played in all 3 matches during the qualification round, playing against Switzerland, Slovakia, and Northern Ireland (a match which featured Jonny Evans).[5]

In October 2005, Haas participated in the Liechtenstein Under-19 team's European Championship campaign for qualifying matches in Group 2. These matches were played in Liechtenstein. Haas played in all 3 matches during the qualification round, playing against Denmark, Slovakia, and Kazakhstan. Haas was impressive during the qualifying rounds, scoring 2 goals in 3 matches for his team. Haas scored against Slovakia (a match which featured Marek Hamsik), and Kazakhstan (a match in which Liechtenstein won, 1-0).

In October 2006, Haas participated in the Liechtenstein Under-19 team's European Championship campaign for qualifying matches in Group 2. These matches were played in Slovenia. Haas played in all 3 matches during the qualification round while serving as captain, playing against Switzerland, Slovenia, and Israel.

Under-21s

Haas also has made eight appearances for Liechtensteins Under-21 side, making his debut in March 2007. He represented Liechtenstein in both the 2009 and 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championships for qualification matches. He has played against Armenia,[6] Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Finland,[7] Turkey, Netherlands,[8] and has played against the Czech Republic on two occasions.

Personal life

Haas is single and is Catholic. Diego can speak several languages including his native German. He is fluent in English and also has limited proficiency in French, Italian, Spanish, and Latin.
