Dezsö J. Horváth

Dezsö Joseph Horváth, CM is a Canadian businessman and educator. He is the current dean of York University's Schulich School of Business. Outside of the academia, he serves as a board member of various corporations, including Dofasco, Inscape Corporation, and Westport Innovations.[1]

Education

In 1963, he graduated from Malmö Technical Institute in Malmö, Sweden with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon his graduation, he worked as a researcher at ASEA, now known as ABB, a Swiss-Swedish multinational corporation headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland. In 1967, he received an MBA from the University of Umeå in Sweden. Then, in 1972 and 1976 respectively, he received his PhD in Organizational Studies and Policy from the same university.[2]

Engineering career

From 1963 to 1968, Horváth worked as an R&D engineer at ASEA, now known as ABB Group.[3]

Academia

After leaving the company to pursue a career in academia, he worked as a sessional lecturer at University of Umeå, giving instruction to business administration students. He received his professorship at Umeå in 1972 along with his first Doctorate in Business Administration. In 1976, his long academic career at York University started when joined the Faculty of Administrative Studies as a Visiting Professor. One year later, he began to work as an Associate Professor at the same school. He was then appointed as the dean of the Schulich School of Business in 1988, and remains the dean to this day.[4]

Asides from his duties as the dean, he is also a tenured professor at the Schulich School of Business and serves as a member of the York University Senate.[5]

Honours

Since 1995, he has been a Fellow of the World Economic Forum.[6]

In the same year, he was also awarded the Award of Merit by the B'nai B'rith Canada.[7]

Since 1996, he has held the Tanna H. Schulich Chair in Strategic Management at the Schulich School of Business.[8]

In 2004, he was named "Dean of the Year" by the Academy of International Business.[9]

In 2008, he was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada.[10]
