Desko Mountains

Coordinates: 69°37′N 72°23′W / 69.617°N 72.383°W / 69.617; -72.383 The Desko Mountains are a group of mountains on Rothschild Island. The mountains included are Bates Peak, Enigma Peak, Goward Peak, Schenk Peak, Morrill Peak, Thuma Peak and Overton Peak,[1] with elevations up to 1000 meters or 3280 feet[2] at Enigma Peak. The range spans 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) from Bates Peak to Overton Peak.The range was photographed from the air by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump and Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) in 1947 and mapped from these air photographs by D. Searle of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960.The range is further defined in U.S. Navy air photographs, 1966, and Landsat imagery, 1975. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Daniel A. Desko, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer, Squadron VXE-6, Operation Deep Freeze, 1977; LC-130 aircraft commander, 1976.
