Career

Dina started her career in the early 1970s, dancing with the Reda Dance Troupe.[4] She became a solo dancer in the 1980s and soon became well known. In the 1990s she became known for her dancing at hotels like the Cairo Sheraton where she shocked Egyptian society by eschewing the traditional bellydance costume for shorts and a bikini.[5] In addition to public performances at hotels and resorts, Dania also dances for private functions. As of 2007, she charged around 7,000 Egyptian pounds to appear at weddings.[4] In 2005, she travelled to Brazil to teach belly dance workshops.[6]

In 2011, she released an autobiography entitled Huriati Fi Al Raqa (My Freedom in Dancing). Because of the 2011 Egyptian revolution it did not sell well in Egypt, but the French-language edition Ma liberté de danser was more successful.[7]

Personal life

She was born in Rome, Italy. Her father was the news correspondent for the Middle East News Agency in Rome.[4] Her sister Rita is a retired singer. At age 16, Dina became depressed after her young fiancé committed suicide and she unsuccessfully attempted to kill herself.[8] She earned a master's degree in philosophy from Ain Shams University at the insistence of her father.[3] Her first marriage was unhappy and ended in divorce in 1998.[4] She then married director Sameh El-Bagouri, the father of her son Ali.[9][4] After El-Bagouri's death from a brain tumour in 2001,[4] she secretly married Hossam Abul-Futuh. Several sex videos he had filmed of them were leaked by Egyptian police who had discovered them while searching his home. After the scandal caused by the sex tapes, it was rumored that she would retire, but she returned to her career.[10] She is now married to Egyptian businessman Wael Abu Hussein.[11]
