Economic espionage

China has engaged in widespread economic espionage in countries throughout the world. A report by Northrop Grumman, describes Chinese economic espionage as comprising 'the single greatest threat to U.S. technology'and the theft of US defense engineering data through cyberattack has; 'saved the recipient of the information years of research and development and significant amounts of funding'.[2] [2]

Joe Stewart, Director of Malware Research at internet security firm SecureWorks, stated in reference to the 2009 cyberattack Operation Aurora which targeted multiple companies including Google, Adobe Systems,[3] Yahoo, Symantec, Northrop Grumman, Morgan Stanley[4] and Dow Chemical[5] "there is a persistent campaign of “espionage-by-malware” emanating from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Corporate and state secrets both have been shanghaied over a period of five or more years, and the activity becomes bolder over time with little public acknowledgement or response from the U.S. government".[6] Navarro and Autry describe the persistent cyberattacks on the United States emanating from China as the dawn of a 'new cold cyberwar'. In 2009 meeting Alex Allan, chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC), briefed members of the ministerial committee on national security that China may now have the capability to shut down the United Kingdom by crippling its telecommunications and utilities through cyberattacks[7]
