Early career

Darrin's first taste of broadcasting came at the age of 19 when he volunteered his time at the local community radio station CKWR 98.7 fm in Waterloo, Ontario with a show called "The 2 Youts" along with his co-host Eric Lohrenz aka DJ Lupe the duo started in the midnight till 4am time slot which soon moved from the graveyard shift to became the weekend's primetime feature featuring the best in hip-hop, reggae and electronic music. Soon the 2 Youts were interviewing some of the biggest names on the music scene from The Beastie Boys to Moby and doing their part to encourage and promote local talent. Volunteering at the Community Radio station was just the start, Maharaj also volunteered at Rogers Community Television and soon found himself attending the School of Broadcast Journalism at Fanshawe College in London, Ont.

Television

Upon graduation Maharaj was fortunate to land a job immediately in television. After a few months of general reporting Darrin quickly made the transition to become the "Entertainment Videographer" for the The New VR in Barrie, Ontario (now A Channel) working not only as the reporter and host but as the camera operator, editor and producer of his daily stories.

This role took him all across North America and put him in many a strange situation from interviewing top stars like John Travolta and Mel Gibson to wrestling crocodiles at Gatorland in Florida to skydiving, rock climbing and more.

In 2002 Darrin was asked to help launch CHUM Television's newest station on the west coast Citytv (CKVU) in Vancouver as their Entertainment Specialist. On his first day at the station he was sent to interview BC beauty Pamela Anderson at her beach home in Malibu, California. while there the young broadcaster caught the eye of world renowned designer & photographer Karl Lagerfeld who was on hand to photograph Pamela and ended up putting Darrin into the front seat of her Viper and doing an impromptu photo session. Aside from co-anchoring 10 news casts per week, Darrin hosted live cut ins and season finales for popular programs like ABC's "the Bachelor" and "America's Next Top Model".

After serving almost 4 years with Citytv Vancouver Darrin returned home to host "Inside Jam!" and co-host "Canoe-Live" on Toronto's SunTV.

In January 2007 Darrin left SunTV and rejoined his old friend and mentor, media mogul Moses Znaimer. Maharaj is a host and reporter for his production company MZTV where he works on a number of shows and upcoming projects including serving as the host and face of the new broadcast network TELUS TV.

Maharaj has also had a chance to experience the big screen venturing occasionally into the world of acting. He has appeared in several episodes of the sci-fi series The Collector, the feature The Exorcism Of Emily Rose with Laura Linney and worked closely with award winning director Antoine Fuqua on the film Shooter starring Mark Wahlberg.

Ironically he is usually cast as a hard news reporter.
