Life

Dutton grew up in central California. She graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a BA in History and then lived for a year in England before moving to Los Angeles where she worked in music management. She later studied writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2007, she earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Denver, where she also served as Associate Editor for the Denver Quarterly. For six years she taught fiction and literature classes in the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. She worked as a book designer at Dalkey Archive Press for four of those years. She is now an assistant professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

In 2010, Dutton launched her own independent press Dorothy, a publishing project. The website states that Dorothy, a publishing project is dedicated "to works of fiction, or near fiction, or about fiction, mostly by women." To date, the press has published books by Renee Gladman, Barbara Comyns, and Manuela Draeger (translated from the French by Brian Evenson).
