Daniel James (assisted suicide)

Daniel James (assisted suicide)

Daniel James was a young British man who obtained assisted suicide in 2008 after being paralysed.

James was paralysed playing rugby on 12 March 2007. Due to his paralysis James required help to get to the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. This help came, despite their protestations against his decision, from his parents. His assisted suicide took place on September 12, 2008.

His parents' actions were likely to have contravened English law. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions determined that prosecuting them would not be in the public interest.

Around the same time Sky TV broadcast the death of a man as he committed suicide with assistance and this led to James's case receiving additional coverage on British television news.[citation needed]
