It was built in 1833 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
The New London Maritime Society operates the site as the Custom House Maritime Museum, with exhibits including New London's maritime history, ship models, the ship La Amistad, the history of the customs building and current custom operations, and regional lighthouses.
The Society also owns the New London Harbor Light, and plans to operate tours of the lighthouse beginning in 2011.[2]
