Townsend joined LOCOG in 2006 and is in charge of the Commercial team that consists of client services, commercial negotiations, ticketing,[1] marketing and brand management.[2] As Commercial Director, Townsend's main responsibility is to secure £2 billion of funding to support the staging of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Townsend is responsible for all forms of revenue generation and procurement including agreeing with the International Olympic Committee LOCOG’s share of worldwide broadcast rights and the share of the worldwide TOP sponsorship programme.

In an interview with Management Today, Townsend compared his style of management to that of Alex Ferguson's, and admitted that although there had been some media controversy surrounding the sale of London 2012 tickets, the process had been the fairest and most successful to date.[3] In 2011, portraits of sports stars and the people that helped organise the London 2012 games were unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery, including a photo of Chris Townsend[4]
