Heleneborg

Heleneborg

Heleneborg is a part of Södermalm, a district of Stockholm, Sweden. It is opposite Långholmen island (home to Långholmen prison up until 1975).

History

Heleneborg was the location of an armaments factory owned by Immanuel Nobel. There his son Alfred Nobel and his brothers experimented with the safe handling of the explosive nitroglycerin. After several explosions in this plant (including one which killed the youngest brother Emil Oskar Nobel), Alfred Nobel created Alfred Nobel & Company in Germany to continue his work in more isolated circumstances.
