Pente Pigadia

Pente Pigadia or Pende Pigadia (Greek: Πέντε Πηγάδια meaning the "Five Wells"), accented form: Pénte Pigádia and Pendé Pigádia is a settlement in the municipality of Filippiada in the northern Preveza Prefecture in Greece not far from Kleisoura. Pente Pigadia is about 5 to 6 km east of the GR-5/E55 (Patras - Antirrio - Arta - Ioannina) and is linked with another secondary road linking Arta to the south and Ioannina to the north. The area are mainly made up of hills and mountains, farmlands dominate the area.

Kleisoura is located northwest of Arta, NNE of Filippiada and Preveza and south of Ioannina.

Population

Geography

Its geography consists of forests and some barren land, farmlands are within the villages. The Xerovouni mountains lie to the east.

History

Pente Pigadia was under Ottoman rule until the Balkan Wars in October 21, 1912, where the Battle of Pente Pigadia took place, later it joined the rest of Greece after the end in July 1913. It adopted its current name in the 1920s, prior to that, the village was known as Brigka or Briga (Μπρίγκα). After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt and later emigration occurred to larger cities and developed countries. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1970s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s.

Pente Pigadia has a church, and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest school is in Kleisoura, lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Filippiada.
