Attributes of some free software licenses

Legend:
* Persistence of the 4 fundamental freedoms : No = No persistence at all ; * = persistence on code modification ; ** = persitence on code addition.

* Level of permissivity : No = absolutely not permissive ; * = permissivity around the software brick ; ** = permissivity on the software brick itself.

* Copyleft : (++) = strong copyleft ; (+) = standard copyleft.

Copyleft

Among the different types of free software licenses, some of them allow the modification and redistribution of the software without any restriction, and for instance, authorize proprietary modified or extended versions of the program without having to disclose the source code. Other free software licenses, require that the modified or extended version of the program be free as well. This feature is called "copyleft".

In order for the program to remain free, the author will have to disclose the source code when distributing the program. It will be impossible for him to redistribute the software under a proprietary license.

A copyleft is strong when the redistribution of the modified or extended program can only be done under the initial license.

A copyleft is standard when the redistribution of the modified program is to be done under the initial license but the choice of the license for additional code and features remains free (even if the choice is a proprietary license)
