The Alpha Phi Omega International Service Fraternity and Sorority was established in the
University of the Philippines, Mindanao [ [http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/University-of-the-Philippines,-Mindanao| History of UP Mindanao as well as list of recognized organizations] ] on September 14, 1999 when a group of 17 young men and women attended the first Pledge Ritual Ceremony. These determined Iskolar ng Bayan made it to the Service stage on November 27, 1999 through the initiative and leadership ofKarl Arthur Pioquinto of Beta Phi Chapter as Grand Chancellor,Severosa Cabatingan of Epsilon Upsilon Chapter as the Lady Prime Chancellor,Christopher Paran of Beta Phi Chapter as the Auxiliary Prime Chancellor, andVivencio Rodriguez Jr. of Epsilon Upsilon Chapter. From the group of 17 survivors, 5 of them were ritualized on March 2, 2000. The second group was ritualized on September 24 of that same year. Since then, Alpha Phi Omega in the University of the Philippines in Mindanao has rapidly, healthily, and generously grown as an organization. It was recognized by the University on July 16, 2001 because of its unending support and numerous services to the student body and faculty, and to the University itself. On August 13, 2001, the organization was granted autonomy, conducting chapter-based training, by the Regional Training Committee of Region XI. May 23, 2003 was another landmark date for the growing organization when the APO Sorority of UP Mindanao was recognized and given the name Lambda Nu Chapter during the 22nd Biennial Convention held inBacolod . Following the standard that has been set for college campus-based volunteerism by all the different chapters of the organization all throughout the Philippines, the Lambda Nu Chapter has spearhead numerous services including feeding programs made in the locality of Mintal, as well as medical and dental missions in Datu Salumay, Marilog District, Buda, Davao City and in Barangay 117, Mintal, Davao City. The medical and dental mission held in Barangay 117 was conducted last September 14, 2008. This was part of the thanksgiving celebration conducted by the Chapter which was celebrating its 9th founding year. The Chapter was able to cater to almost 300 individuals in dire need of medical or dental assistance. Aside from medical and dental missions, the Organization is also involved in feeding programs specially in the community where it belongs.
The APO Lambda Nu Chapter has also been consistent in conducting yearly Bloodletting activities with the help of the Davao Chapter of the Red Cross of the Philippines. The organization has also been devoted to visiting the Balay Pasilungan, a care centre for homeless children in
Davao City , as well as the Missionaries for Charity (Home for the Sick and Malnourished Children), donating colouring books and school materials, clothes and toys, medicine, milk and diapers. What is most important is the time that the brothers and sisters of APO Lambda Nu spent with the underprivileged orphans in both institutions. The Chapter was also involved withHabitat For Humanity 's project in Sitio Padada, Barangay Coronon, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur in 2002. The chapter also regularly conducts environmental programs such as coastal clean-ups, tree planting activities and park beautification.Oblation Run
The APO Fraternity organized the first
Oblation Run in the UP Mindanao campus on March 2, 2004. With a theme of "Panaghinugpungay sa Mindanao" (Unanimity in Mindanao), these twelve brothers, with nothing on but body paintings, lobbied for the rights of the indigenous communities inMindanao to their ancestral domains. Because of the influence of the University's aspiration to promote Mindanaoan Cultural Arts, the brothers, with the help of theDavao Artist Foundation, Inc. (DAFI), decided to make their bodies as canvasses during the run. The twelve brothers had to stand for more than three hours prior to the run while different Davaoeno artists painted on the naked flesh. Each artist had to translate into the paintings their interpretation of the theme. The most recent Oblation Run was held last March 2, 2007 with the brothers lobbying for a clean national election, "ELECTION '07 - Kalinaw Ipalabaw". [ [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Akfiqoq-Iw| 2007 Oblation Run in UP Mindanao in Youtube] ]Unfortunately, due to some misunderstanding with the UP Mindanao administration, the Fraternity was not able to run this year.
