In 1887 Preedy was appointed curate of St Peter's church in Barnsley. Offended by the local rugby football team's decision to play a match on Good Friday, he set about forming a club which played association football instead. Preedy acted as principal fundraiser and organiser of the Barnsley St Peter's club, and even played in its first match.cite book |author=Vamplew, Wray; Cox, Richard Garner; Russell, Dave |title=Encyclopedia of British Football |publisher=Frank Cass|url=http://books.google.com/books?output=html&id=JKbb02bg6zYC&dq=%22Tiverton+Preedy%22&pg=PA103&lpg=PA103&sig=ACfU3U0fACzBdclDgbEpy4diL3VmhPB6rQ&q=%22Tiverton+Preedy%22 |location=London |year=2002 |pages=p103 |isbn=0-7146-5249-0 |oclc= |doi= |accessdate=] He also persuaded a local landowner to allow the club the use of the land on which the club's Oakwell stadium still stands.cite web|url=http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_19950106/ai_n9628539|title=Barnsley looking to build on the spirit of Gough|publisher=The Independent|accessdate=2008-09-24|date=1995-01-06]

Preedy remained actively involved with the club until he moved to Islington in London in 1893. In 1926 he was appointed a Prebendary at St. Pauls Cathedral. He died in his sleep in April 1928 and is buried at Islington Cemetery in Finchley. [Barnsley F.C. programme vs Tottenham Hotspur 23rd September 1986]
