Charles Fane de Salis

Charles Fane de Salis , MA, DD (theol), was Bishop of Taunton from 1911 to 1930. Born in Fringford, Oxfordshire on 18th or 9 March 1860 into a clerical family [His father was the Reverend H.J.A.Fane de Salis > "The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, Hamilton & Co 1889 ] , he was educated at Eton [“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and Exeter College, Oxford. Ordained in 1883 he was Curate at St. Michael's, Coventry, Vicar of Milverton, then East Brent [ [http://www.rooksbridge.org.uk/RootsMagicStuff/b39.htm Vicar of St Mary’s, East Brent] ] and Prebendary of Coombe before a 19 year stint as Suffragan Bishop of Taunton ["Episcopal Changes Resignation of The Bishop of Taunton" The Times Thursday, Sep 18, 1930; pg. 12; Issue 45621; col C ] . He died on 24 January 1942 and is commemorated in a memorial on the west wall of Wells Cathedral ["Memorial to former Bishop of Taunton unveiled " The Times Monday, Mar 22, 1943; pg. 6; Issue 49500; col D] . His paternal grandfather was Jerome, 4th Count de Salis-Soglio [http://genealogics.org/pedigree.php?personID=I00449973&tree=LEO] . William Fane de Salis was an uncle, Lord Bishop Foster a great-grandfather, and John Francis Charles, 7th Count de Salis-Soglio was a first cousin once removed.

Family

He was the fourth and youngest son of Rev. Count Henry Jerome Augustine Fane de Salis, (born Pisa 16.2.1828, died Virginia Water 18.2.1915), of Portnall Park. M.A. (Oxon), JP (Surrey), and sometime chairman of the Holloway Sanatorium, Egham. Henry was Rector of Fringford, Bicester, Oxfordshire from 1852 until 1872 when he inherited Portnall Park, Virginia Water, Staines, Surrey from his brother-in-law, Colonel Thomas-Chaloner Bisse-Challoner (High Sheriff Surrey, 1838). He had married, on 29.3.1853, Grace Elizabeth Henley, (8.7.1823, died Virginia Water 28.8.1898), daughter of the Rt. Hon. Joseph Warner Henley, MP (he was part of Lord Derby's capable but infamous Who? Who? Ministry), of Waterperry House, Oxfordshire, by his wife Georgina Fane, a daughter of the family of Fane of Wormsley.

Three brothers and a sister

* Rodolph, (born Fringford, 10.12.1854, died 26.11.1931 (buried Virginia Water). Lived in Acton, Westminster and Kensington. He inherited Portnall Park in 1915 and sold it in 1924. He lived subsequently at Finmere house, county Buckingham. Educated at Eton and MA (Trinity Hall, Cantab); FGS; AMICE. Chairman of Singer Motor Company; President of the Canal Association; chairman of the Grand Junction Canal Co.; Director North Staffordshire Railway and the Great Central Railway. One daughter.

*Sir Cecil, (born Fringford, 31.5.1857, died Wargrave 9.3.1948) (buried Harlington), of Dawley Court, Uxbridge, county Middlesex, which he inherited from his uncle William in 1896, he sold it in 1929; he lived later at Holly Cross House, Wargrave, Berks. (sold 1949). Educated at Eton and MA (Christ Church, Oxon); barrister; chairman Middlesex County council (1919-1924); chairman market gardeners H. & A. Pullen Burry, Ltd. of Sompting, West Sussex; JP (Middlesex, 1897); CB (1931); KCB (1935); Deputy Lieutenant (Middlesex, 1918); High Sheriff (Middlesex, 1905). 14 children.

*Sir William, (born Fringford 21.7.1858, died Roche Court, north Fareham 23.1.1939). Admiral; KBE (1922), JP (Hants., 1914); MVO; Prussian Order of the Red Eagle (1904, ii classe); Portugese Order of the Tower and Sword (1916); Ogaden Somali expedition (1901). Three children.

*Georgiana (born Fringford 18.9.1861, died 14.4.1910 (buried Virginia Water)). She married, on 19.1.1888, Rev. Robert (Ro) Abercromby Hamilton, (died 1937); curate of Sunningdale, Berks.; vicar of Stoke Lyne, co. Oxon.; vicar of Cranbourne St. Peter, co. Berks., 1891-1910. MA (Oxon, St. John’s coll.). In later life his address was at Fairfield Lodge, Countess Wear, Devon. No issue.

Wife

Bishop Charles married, on 21.7.1896, Lady Mary Alice (28.6.1863 - 11.1.1930) daughter of Thomas Augustus Wolstenholme Parker, 6th Earl of Macclesfield, by Lady Mary Frances, daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster. They had two daughters and a son who died in 1991.
