The Dachsbrache were bred as small and slower hounds for smaller game. Brache seems to refer to their being running hounds, [http://www.deutscher-bracken-club.de/pages/die-bracken/historie.php History, from the Deutscher Bracken Club (in German)] ] ranging through the woods and alerting the hunter to the position of the game by baying (as opposed to walking hounds or leash hounds, which walk along with the person.) The name Dachsbrache may reflect that the Dachsbrache was bred down in size by
crossbreeding larger Bracken with theDachshund .The Westphalian Dachsbracke is the ancestor breed of the Swedish scenthound, the
Drever . Dogs of similar type are seen in very old European paintings, although the Westphalian Dachsbracke breed was first described in 1886. It was recognized by the "Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen" (German Kennel Club) in 1935, and by theFédération Cynologique Internationale in 1987, as breed number 100 in Group 6 Scenthounds, Section 1.3 Small hounds.
