The Westphalian Dachsbracke is a small scenthound, a breed of dog originating in Westphalia, a region of Germany.

Appearance

The Westphalian Dachsbracke (Westfälische Dachsbracke) is a small hound, similar in size and appearance to the Beagle. It has drop ears, stands about 30 to 38 cm/12 to 15in at the withers, and the coat has short fur, usually tricolor or red, with white markings.

History

The Dachsbrache were bred as small and slower hounds for smaller game. Brache seems to refer to their being running hounds, [http://www.deutscher-bracken-club.de/pages/die-bracken/historie.php History, from the Deutscher Bracken Club (in German)] ] ranging through the woods and alerting the hunter to the position of the game by baying (as opposed to walking hounds or leash hounds, which walk along with the person.) The name Dachsbrache may reflect that the Dachsbrache was bred down in size by crossbreeding larger Bracken with the Dachshund.

The Westphalian Dachsbracke is the ancestor breed of the Swedish scenthound, the Drever. Dogs of similar type are seen in very old European paintings, although the Westphalian Dachsbracke breed was first described in 1886. It was recognized by the "Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen" (German Kennel Club) in 1935, and by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1987, as breed number 100 in Group 6 Scenthounds, Section 1.3 Small hounds. [ [http://www.fci.be/nomenclatures_detail.asp?lang=en&file=group6 Fédération Cynologique Internationale Group 6] ] Of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world, only the United Kennel Club in the US recognises the Westphalian Dachsbracke, in its Scenthound Group, using the Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard. It also may be recognised by any of the many minor registries, rare breed groups, hunting clubs, and internet registry businesses.

The Deutsche Bracke ( German Bracke, also called German Hound) is one another breed of Bracke, and is Fédération Cynologique Internationale breed number 299. The Alpenländische Dachsbracke (Alpine Dachsbracke) is breed number 254; that breed originated in Austria. The Drever (breed number 130) is also called the "Swedish Dachsbracke".
