The Malien Première Division 2008/09 championship will be played in 26 rounds between mid December 2008 and August/September 2009. Fourteen clubs will compete, with the club top on points (three points for a win, one point for a draw, zero points for a loss) named Champion and the bottom two clubs relegated to the lower division. The structure by which promoted clubs are chosen has changed over time, but as of 2008, the two promoted teams are chosen from regional league tournaments. One club comes from Malian Groupe B league soccer tournament (for teams near Bamako and the west), while one comes from Malian Groupe A league drawn from other regions. The Malien Première Division is the top division of the Fédération Malienne de Football, it was created in 1966. Malien Cup matches take place during the season, and the top club from the year before competes in the African Club Championships. The league has been professional since 2004.
