South Parkdale railway station

South Parkdale railway station

The South Parkdale railway station was a passenger rail station on the Grand Trunk Railway in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was demolished in 1911 as part of a grade separation engineering project.

History

The Grand Trunk Railway had built rail lines along the Toronto waterfront in 1850. A South Parkdale station was built in the 1870s to serve the growing Parkdale area of the then York Township, opening in 1879. It was demolished in 1911 as part of a grade separation project. The passenger rail services were moved to the Sunnyside railway station.

The grade separation project eliminated a rise to the South Parkdale area by making a cut from east of Dufferin Avenue west to west of Dowling Avenue. The rail lines to the west of the area were elevated from the previous waterfront level to make an even elevation from the Humber River east to Sunnyside, providing subways at several points to provide access to the waterfront from the north.

;Grade separation

After the Sunnyside station was opened, the South Parkdale station was closed and temporary tracks laid to detour around the digging to proceed at the location of the existing tracks.
