Bernie Bridges is the main character and protagonist in the "Rotten School" series of books by R. L. Stine. He is an extremely unmodest person (but stating that he is modest in the books). He is constantly trying to woo his so-called "girlfriend", April-May June, who is a stuck-up pretty girl. His arch-rival is Sherman Oaks, a rich kid from Nyce House.

Personal life

Every day seems to be the same for Bernie: scamming people, causing constant mishaps all over the school, and flawlessy attempting to "woo" April-May June. So every day passes by annoyingly the same.

Blueberry Barf Off

Bernie has seen his arch-rival, Sherman Oaks, show off his new 18-carat gold $5000 dollar watch with 32 applications - including a popcorn - popper. Bernie decides that he must have that watch. But, no matter how many bamboozling schemes that Bernie sets up to get the watch, he fails. Finally, he comes up with a great scheme.

The next day, Bernie states that it is Chipmunk's birthday tomorrow, and that Chipmunk wants lots of blueberry pies, to the cooking teacher, Mrs. Mozzarella. She does so... unaware of Bernie's scheme.

That night, Bernie sneaks the pies off to the basement, and the scheme is revealed... Bernie has done a blueberry pie - eating contest... with the competitors being Beast for Rotten School, and Wes Uphood for Nyce House. Whoever eats the most pies without barfing would determine what would happen to the watch - if Nyce House won, Sherman could keep the watch. If Rotten House won, Bernie would get it.

It happens, and Beast wins! Sherman hands the watch to Bernie. But 20 seconds later, Mrs. Mozzarella comes in and takes the $5000 watch away for charity. Bernie ends up mopping the barf, sobbing.

The Great Smelling Bee

Bernie receives his 2 pets from his parents - Gassy the odourous bulldog, and Lippy the rude parrot. However, in middle of celebrating, Bernie is warned by Feenman - "You know the rule - No Pets Allowed." Bernie has to think up a plan quick to stop him from getting expelled. Suddenly, he has a good idea...

That night, Bernie sneaks to the enrolment room, and creates a name for Gassy - Barry A. Bone. As Barry A. Bone, Gassy is elimanated from all suspicion except for Sherman Oaks, who threatens to tell Headmaster Upchuck that Bernie has pets, vice versa due that Sherman has a robotic pet.

Eventually, Gassy is discovered, and Bernie is nearly expelled, but at the last minute, Upchuck changes the rule. Bernie is saved from expulsion.

The Good, The Bad, and the Very Slimy

Sherman Oaks and Bernie are holding a slug race - Bernie's Sluggo and Sherman's Godzilla versing each other. All is well, until Mrs. Heinie catches the slugs... but narrowly escape punishment - Bernie gets a reminder - "I'm watchinng you". The race is rescheduled for Tuesday.

Bernie tries to woo April-May again, this time for the dance party. After constant whining and convincing by Bernie, April-May agrees... on condition that he be "good" for the next week. "Easy".

Bernie ends up being a goody-goody two shoes for the res of the week, even going to the exaggerating lengths of using the century-year old Study Hall.

However, Bernie breaks his promise due to Sherman insulting Sluggo AND the race being on Monday night. On the same night, he even gets Sherman into trouble because he hosed Headmaster Upchuck.

Unfortunately for Bernie, he is grounded for being good and ends up going to the dance with Jennifer Ecch.

Lose, Team, Lose!

The school football team is once again losing, adding to their 1'500 losing streak on R. U. Dumm Soccer/Football Field against the HammerHead Sharks at Lindsay Lohan School. No matter the Fighting Apples try, they keep losing.

Bernie sees April-May June watching Sherman Oaks kicking the winning goal for his soccer team. Bernie decides that he can be better than Sherman... a star in football and an end to this streak of losing, by adding a new member to the team, Jennifer Ecch (who is trying to knit a "Bernie Loves Jen Sweater".

All goes well (with the streak being broken and April-May coming to cheer for football and Bernie stating "I'll let you knit ten sweaters if we win") until Sherman plots to bring lots of girls to the team, but Bernie still outsmarts him.

After the toughest team, The Bonebreaks, surrender, Bernie is allowed to go to diner with April-May. But then the Ecch comes out and drags Bernie away.

Shake, Rattle and Hurl!

The Talent Show is coming up, with the grand prize being 2 tickets to see the world famous Ploops. Bernie desperately wants to win the tickets and go to the concert with April-May June. However, Bernie cannot find any one that has "real" talent for Rotten House, until one day...

Bernie is walking past a closet with his friends, until he hears this amazing guitar solo coming from inside the closet. He opens it up, and finds Chipmunk in there. Sneakily, Bernie enters Chipmunk into the auditions. Unfortunately, Bernie forgets to bring the closet, which makes Chipmunk vomit from extreme nervousness.

Eventually, Bernie figures out that Chiomunk must have the closet in order for him to play. So, when it is the actual Talent Show, Chipmunk is in the closet, and plays "awesome" notes for an hour. He wins, of course, but instead of Bernie going with April-May, it's Chipmunk. Bernie, livid, goes into the closet and shut the door
