They are theGamble House , theHale Solar Laboratory , the Rose Bowl, and two sites at theJet Propulsion Laboratory (theSpace Flight Operations Facility and theTwenty-Five-Foot Space Simulator ).Pasadena's prominence in the cultural, scientific, architectural and sporting history ofSouthern California is evidenced by the heavy concentration of registered historic places in a city with a population of 134,000. Although Pasadena's population is 3.5% that of its large neighbor to the south, Pasadena's total of 98 registered historic places compares favorably with the 188 registered historic places in Los Angeles. The first sites in Pasadena to be listed on the National Register wereGreene and Greene 'sAmerican Craftsman masterpiece, theGamble House (built from 1908-1909), thePasadena Playhouse (built in 1924) andFrank Lloyd Wright 's textile block structure, theMillard House (built in 1923). Perhaps most famous for its hosting the annualNew Year's Day football game at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena was also a center of architectural innovation in the early 20th Century as Greene and Greene built their innovative Craftsman-stylebungalow houses and larger-scaleultimate bungalow s throughout Pasadena, including the Gamble House,Robert R. Blacker House ,Dr. W. T. Bolton House andCordelia A. Culbertson House . Other architects of note who have designed buildings in Pasadena includeMyron Hunt , (Rose Bowl and Caltech) andWelton Beckett (Bullock's Pasadena).Pasadena is also the home of many leading scientific and cultural institutions, including
California Institute of Technology (Caltech), theJet Propulsion Laboratory , thePasadena Playhouse , and theNorton Simon Museum of Art . Several sites relate to Pasadena's long connection with astronomy and space exploration, including theSpace Flight Operations Facility , theTwenty-Five-Foot Space Simulator , andHale Solar Laboratory .
