Pirate Cat Radio (87.9 FM) is a low power community radio station that has been broadcasting since April of 1996, in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pirate Cat Radio also simultaneously broadcasts in Los Angeles at 87.9FM and Berlin, Germany on 104.8FMfact|date=August 2008

The station founder, Monkey, started broadcasting Pirate Cat Radio out of his bedroom in Los Gatos, California (a suburb in the San Francisco Bay Area) at the age of 15.fact|date=August 2008

As of March 12008, Pirate Cat Radio became the first unlicensed American radio station to open its studio to the public which is run out of its volunteer-operated cafe in San Francisco, California.fact|date=August 2008 Currently Pirate Cat Radio is widely known as the only unlicensed radio station to continuously broadcasts internationally with multiple transmitters.fact|date=August 2008

Despite being a unlicensed radio station and receiving over 600 "Notices of Unlicensed Radio Operation" from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) (as of August 2008); the station has been able to stay on the air operating under an obscure clause in the US Code of Federal Regulations (Title 47 section 73.3542 of US Code of Federal Regulations).or|date=August 2008
