Deal.org

Deal.org is a crime prevention program administered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) based in Ottawa, Canada. It is run as a for-youth, by-youth web-based program that operates under the principles of [http://www.ccsd.ca/cpsd/ccsd/ crime prevention through social development] by providing information to youth about issues affecting them in their personal, family and community lives. The program’s aim is to “be a forum for expression… promote leadership and… encourage youth to take a stand and get involved in their schools and communities.” [ [http://www.deal.org/content/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=72 deal.org Mission Statement] ]

History

The deal.org Program was created in 1997 by an RCMP officer and four high school students from Ottawa. The acronym “deal” originally stood for “Drug Education and Awareness for Life”; the initial goal of the program was to be a drug information resource [ [http://www.deal.org/content/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=795&Itemid=967 deal.org celebrates its 10th anniversary] ] . Since then, the program has grown and now covers many issues affecting youth, including violence, e-literacy, pop culture, mental health and discrimination.

In 2002, deal.org’s French counterpart – choix.org – was created. Before this time, deal.org’s English content was directly translated into French [ [http://www.deal.org/content/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=795&Itemid=967 deal.org celebrates its 10th anniversary] ] .
