The Bihar Government has established Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) to provide quality legal education along the lines of the established National Law Schools, such as NLSIU Bangalore, NUJS Kolkata, NALSAR Hyderabad, .

The Chief Justice of Patna High Court is the ex-officio Chancellor of the university. Presently, the position is held by chief justice Hon`ble Justice Miss Rekha Manharlal Doshit.

Campus

The University is situated at the Mithapur area (spread over a sprawling campus of nearly 20 acres (81,000 m2 )) of Patna between the Patna Junction Railway Station (15 mins. by feet) and Bus Stand (10 mins. by feet), where Building construction work is nearing completion. A sprawling lawn with various types of palm trees has adds beauty to the landscape. The plot has been allotted by the Government. The University has a mess that provides the students with nutritious and hygienic vegetarian & non vegetarian food. Mess Services are guided by the Students' Committee which has the privilege of deciding the menu. So, the food served is based completely on the inputs from students who enjoy a commanding role in the mess management. A Canteen is also available on the Campus, at both the Halls of Residences (for boys and girls), that provides light snacks in the form of samosa, patties, chips, biscuits, cakes etc. The library and IT Centre's three-storeyed building is on the verge of completion. The University also has Faculty members' residential flats.

The University has created a niche for itself in a very short span of time and is now renowned nationally. Some of the achievements of the university at the national and international level includes the following:

-Won the " Most Dignified Team" award at the 6th National Law School Parliamentary Debate Competition, organised by NLSIU,Bangalore.

-Won the "Best Team" award at SPOCULIT, organized by RMLNLU, Lucknow.

-Won the "4th best memorial" and being the semi-finalists in the Philip.C.Jessup International Moot Court Competition(North India Round) 2011.

-Reached the semi-finals and won the "2nd Best Memorial" Award and "3rd Best Team" Award in the North India Rounds of 14th Stetson Environmental Law Moot Court Competition (India)- 2010.

-Awarded the "4th Best Memorial" in Surana & Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition 2010.(North Rounds) Chandigarh.

-Awarded the "Best memorial Award" & The Semifinalist position in 1st NLIU - Juris Corp National Corporate Law Moot Court Competition, Bhopal.

-Awarded "Best Memorial" in 1st ILNU(Institute of Law Nirma University) 2011.

-Awarded the "Best Judgment" Award in International Judgement Deliberation Round, Government Law college, Mumbai held on 5th & 6th February 2011.

-The University has shown consistent presence at international moots and arbitration competetions across the world, including Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration (both Hong Kong and Vienna rounds) and Murdoch Moot Court Competition, Australia.

Student Activities

-The SBC(Student Bar Council): A student body consisting of President, Vice-President and other Committee members that co-ordinates and regulates all the student activities of the University. It has four Committees [ADC(Academic and Debating Committee), MCC(Moot Court Committee), SCC( Sports and Cultural Committee)and HMC( Hostel and Mess Committee)] functioning under it, the members of which are selected every year through student-voting. The SBC organizes various student activities through the coherent functions of these Committees.

-CNLUNPDC: The CNLU National Parliamentary Debate Competition is being organised since 2009 on an annual basis in the fond memory of Sri Shilesh Chandra Mishra, in the month of February generally. It is a 3 on 3 All Asian Style Debate. It is being organised keeping in view the University's motto of Knowledge is the greatest wealth and to provide a single roof to some of the finest debating talent across the entire country.

-DPL: The Debating Premier League is the brainchild of few students of 2008-2013 batch and is an intra-university debating event. It is an all students event, i.e. organised, regulated and participated by the University students. In it, various students buy teams composed of a fixed number of debaters and an adjudicator through points-bidding system.

-CPL: The Cricket Premier League is a cricket event based on IPL, where students buy teams through points-bidding system composed of players from any batch. All the matches are held inside the University campus itself.

-El Intelecto: It is an intra-university Quiz Competition organised by few students of the University. It comprises of two levels, the first being the written round and the second, an oral round. The written round consists of MCQs on the basis of question-pattern of UPSC. Only the participants qualifying level 1 enters into level 2.
