Indira Sant

Indira Sant

Indira Sant (Born 1914) is a renowned Marathi Poet. She was born in a progressive, well to do Maharashtrian family as Indira Dikshit. She spent her childhood in rural parts of southern Maharashtra. There, the rural landscape and the human interactions with nature through various daily chores and rituals would have a lifelong impact on her creative mind.

She studied at the prestigious Fergusson College in Pune where she met her future husband Mr Narayan Sant. Her husband died just after 10 years of marriage. The immense pain of loss found its way of expression through her poems. The principle theme of most of her poems is love and longing. The love and influence of nature is evident through the insistent presence of trees, flowers, springs etc in her poems. Her work also deals with many dimensions of a woman’s life. She had 3 children.

She worked as a teacher in a teacher's training school in Belgaum. Through her writing she comes across as a very intense, sensitive and private person.

Her younger sister Kamla was the second wife of the famous Marathi novelist Mr. Na Si Phadke. Her son Prakash Sant became famous with his four books Vanvas, Sharada Sangeet, Pankha, Jhumbar.
