Plot

Part 1

Monica works with a man named Edward (Adrian Pasdar) who works in the toy business. He hires a woman named Jean Chang (Bai Ling), who is hiding in America from the Chinese. Edward finds himself becoming genuinely interested in her -- an interest that will eventually turn to love -- as she explains how she and many like her were affected by Western culture. Her husband (Ping Wu) adopted the nickname "Gus" after Auguste Rodin's "Thinker" and their best friend (Russell Wong) adopted his name, "George," after Washington. Jean explains how she and her husband took part in the Tiananmen Square protests. George was captured while she escaped. Now her daughter named Piao Yue (which means Liberty Moon) is lost somewhere in China.

Later, Monica and Edward find one of the companies courting a joint venture with Tanner Toys is none other than Liberty Moon International Management. Edward, Alex (Ben Bode) Monica, and Jean head to China after finding this out. There, Jean finds his husband Gus still alive, but is sold as a slave. Gus and Jean see each other for the last time before Gus dies.

Part 2

The police identify Jean and chase her. She manages to hide, though. Jean then steals a megaphone and tries to explain the innocence of his husband in front of the crowd. Just as the police take her away, she sees her daughter with a bunch of other kids.

Edward begs George to help Jean. But George says that it is a very short trial, with no attorneys, no crowd. Just a few judges, who find Jean Chang guilty. In the prison cell, Monica appears to Jean as an angel. She is amazed finding out that God is real. Monica promises to stay with her until she dies. Hours later, police take her to another room where fellow prisoners come to beat her to death. Monica shields Jean from the punches and the kicks, and Jean is saved...for now. The police then take her, and throw her down a flight of cement stairs. That is enough to kill her. Andrew and Monica tell her she's welcome in heaven.

That same night, Monica appears to Edward as an angel saying that Jean died. Edward cries, saying he loved her. Monica tells him that she's safe with the Father.

The next day, Edward and George fly kites together, and a girl walks up to Edward and says her name is Piao Yue. A few days later, Piao Yue is adopted by George, and Edawrd returns home. Heading to New York, he notices the Statue of Liberty, then weeps.
