DSE firefighter

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is responsible for managing public land and other natural resources in Victoria, Australia. DSE Fire and Emergency Management has the responsibility to prevent and suppress wildfires in all of Victoria's National Parks, State Forests and Protected Public Land. This comprises 7.7 million hectares (19 million acres) of land, or roughly one third of the area of the state.

A DSE firefighter is recognised as one of Australia's most elite wildfire firefighters, incorporating a helicopter rappel crew to reach isolated fires very quickly.

DSE employs several hundred people on a full time basis for several months each fire season to help suppress wildfire, as well as assist in prevention works, including prescribed burning. These people are called Project Firefighters (PFF's)

DSE uses special "dry firefighting" techniques to minimise water use in Victoria's mostly arid climate
