Universal design for instruction

Universal Design for Instruction (UDI) is a framework for college educators that guides the development of inclusive instructional materials and methods, with the goal of teaching all students, including those with disabilities, more effectively.

UDI has nine basic principles:

*Principle 1: Equitable use
*Principle 2: Flexibility in use
*Principle 3: Simple and intuitive
*Principle 4: Perceptible information
*Principle 5: Tolerance for error
*Principle 6: Low physical effort
*Principle 7: Size and space for approach and use
*Principle 8: A community of learners
*Principle 9: Instructional climate [Scott, SS, McGuire, J., & Shaw, SF. (2001) "Principles of Universal Design for Instruction". Storrs, CT: Center on Postsecondary Education and Disability, University of Connecticut.]

Origins of UDI

The UDI principles were developed by researchers at the Center on Postsecondary Education and Disability at the University of Connecticut.

UDI draws on the work of Chickering and Gamson [Scott, McGuire, & Shaw, 2001] , who originally had published a set of principles for more inclusive postsecondary education, and the principles of Universal Design, a movement in architecture to created more inclusive built environments. Universal Design was pioneered by Ron Mace at North Carolina State University. Mace and colleagues developed a set of principles to guide the design of buildings to be more accessible to those with mobility limitations (disabilities). Mace discovered that making buildings more accessible to those with permanent mobility limitations, actually made spaces more accessible to all users of that space. This led eventually to changes in building code laws across the United States and can be credited with having an important role in the "accessibility movement".

Ron Mace's original principles of Universal Design are as follows: [ [http://www.design.ncsu.edu/cud/about_ud/udprinciples.htm Center for Universal Design, NCSU] ]

* Equitable Use

* Flexibility in Use

* Simple and intuitive

* Perceptible Information

* Tolerance for Error

* Low Physical Effort

* Size and Space for Approach and Use

UDI adapts and applies these principles to the field of college instruction.
