Strong two bid

Strong two bid

A strong two bid is an opening bid of 2 of a suit. They are natural bids, used to show a hand that is too strong to open at the 1-level (more than about 21 points). This was commonly used in the early days of bridge, but nearly all players use the more common weak two bid nowadays, except 2Clubs, the only strong bid, which is artificial and forcing, because hands where the weak two bid would be useful occur much more frequently than strong two openers.

Responses

A strong two bid is forcing for at least one round. Possible responses are:
*A 2NT response is negative, showing a weak hand.
*Raise partner's suit with 3-card support.
*Bid a new suit with some values and 5+ cards in the new suit
*Bid 3NT with good values and a balanced hand.
