The company was first established in about 1860 as a
shipbuilder . Over the next 100 years companies in which it had an interest built some of the firstironclad ships , numerousships for theRoyal Navy (as "Cammell Laird ") andmass transit railway carriages (as "Metro-Cammell "). In the 1970's it disposed of itsshipbuilding and heavy engineering activities and moved into theautomotive sector. In the 1980's it moved intosecurity products and in the 1990's intoelectronics .
