Centsports is a website founded in late November 2007 by Texas A&M graduate Victor Palmer. It is notable for claiming to be one of the few legal online forums for gambling and sports betting in the United States.[1]

In August 2011, CentSports was acquired by FreeSportsBet.com.[2]

Legality

Three elements are commonly found in most U.S. state gambling laws - "prize, chance and consideration," according to attorney and gaming-law specialist Chuck Humphrey, the author and webmaster of Gambling-Law-US.com.

Since CentSports does not allow a user to place bets with his/her own money, no "consideration" is involved, thus ensuring the site's legality.[3]

The site is sponsored entirely by advertisers, notably sportsbook.com. Previously, advertisers included Pizza Hut, Skype, and the NBA.[3]

Usage

Users upon generating their accounts are given 10 cents to place bets with. If users accumulate a minimum of 20 dollars they can compete in brackets to cash-out their winnings. Checks are mailed to winners. Any time a user loses all of his/her money, they start over with 10 cents in their account.

The site allows users to bet on a variety of different sports including football (both NFL and CFL), NBA basketball, WNBA basketball, MLB baseball, NHL hockey, soccer, tennis, boxing, NCAA football and basketball, NASCAR, Indy Racing League and mixed martial arts, but not horse racing. During the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, users could place bets on head to head matchups in competitions such as speed skating.

The site has grown its user base mainly through their "crony system" where users invite friends to join the site through a 'crony link' provided by the site.[4] If their friends sign up using that link then the person who sent the link will receive a 5% bonus of their friends' winnings for the life of both accounts.
