Eersterust (also referred to locals as "poort") is a
South Africa nTownship located within the Tshwane Metropolitan District and is located just outsidePretoria .Overview
The area was created by the government of the
apartheid times which many people of the "Colored" race was moved to. Eersterust is situated west of Mamelodi and about 15km east ofTshwane city centre. It was laid out in 1962 on the farm Vlakfontein. Eersterust is seen as the gateway to the industrial areas of Pretoria, like Silverton and Waltloo. Most of the residence work in this area not to far from home. It has an estimated 400,000 residents This community has evolved to develop its own cultural history including unique traditions and a way of life, based on friendliness and hospitality. The main language isAfrikaans but many other are spoken.Restaurants offer a unique local flavour with a variety of choices available. From traditional tastes to the spicy and adventurous. The name of Eersterust is clouded in mystery. Some say it is named after the railway that went to Lyndenburg during the goldrush- This being the first stop- while others speculate that it might have been the first township established in the area.
Eersterust has 6 indepented extensions which offer close-by schooling and Transport routes.Many people have also gatthered to fight crime by starting Neighborhood night watch groups to help the police in protecting the homes and streets of many. As to locals many state the part or parts of Eersterust in which they live in are called Woodspark, Hans Coverdale, Nantes, H.P etc.. but these are just local nicknames giving and no official naming of the areas are listed except the extensions of ext.2,ext.3,etc.4,ext.5 and ext.6. Newspapers and Media however refer to the parts of the area as to North, East and West.
Eersterust is a very religious community that is manifested by the numerous places of worship throughout the region. The first Catholic church which dates back to the early 1950's is located here. This vibrant community on the edge of Tshwane is very much alive with possibility!
