Charles Edmund Nugent

Charles Edmund Nugent

Sir Charles Edmund Nugent (G.C.H.) (1759? - 7 January 1844) was a British admiral. Joining the Navy in 1771, he rose through the ranks during the American War of Independence, primarily active against Spain in the West Indies. He saw action at the 1776 Battle of Sullivan's Island and the 1779 Battle of San Fernando de Omoa before returning to England as a commander in 1782. He was made Member of Parliament in 1783, named Rear Admiral in 1797, and eventually Admiral of the Fleet in 1833.

Family

He was a grandson of Robert Nugent, 1st Earl Nugent, and a brother of Sir George Nugent, 1st Baronet. After their father's death a flaw was found in his marriage and Robert and George were made illegitimate. He died at 85 years of age, leaving one daughter. A drawing of him by William Ridley is held in the National Library, Dublin.[1]
