Kornokipos

Kornokipos

Kornokipos (Greek: "Κορνόκηπος", Turkish: "Görneç") is a village in the Famagusta District in Cyprus, located on the south eastern side of the Kyrenia Mountains. The village name is thought to mean "Beautiful Garden" in one of ancient languages used in Cyprus. It is historically an exclusively Turkish Cypriot settlement and remains so today. In 1960, it had a population of 292 and in 1973 a population of 315 (Source: [http://kypros.org/Occupied_Villages/indexg.html] ). It currently has a population of around 500.

The village was occupied by the Greek Cypriot soldiers from neighboring villages in response to the Turkish army's intervention on 20th July 1974. The village was liberated by the Turkish Army during the second phase of the Turkish invasion in August 1974 and since then is under the control of the unrecognised state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
