Philantothoxins are components of the venom of Egyptian solitary wasp "Philanthus triangulum F" and four toxins are distinguished (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) among which delta-philanthotoxin (dPTX) is most effective to block glutamate receptors [Piek T (1982) Comp Biochem Physiol C 72:311-315] and especially those quisqualate-sensitive, that isAMPA receptor [Clark RB, Donaldson PL, Gration KAF, Lambert JJ, Piek T, Ramsey RL, Spanjer, Usheerwood PNR (1982) Brain Research 241:105-114] . It has later been shown that dPTX targets calcium permeable AMPA receptor and kainate receptor but not NMDA receptor. [Jones MJ, Anis NA, Lodge D (1990) Br J Pharmacol 101(4):968-970]
