Egan was formerly deputy mayor and councillor in the City of Blue Mountains, and was later adviser to the Minister for Communications, Helen Coonan. In 2008, Egan was charged with breaching the Electoral Act, in relation to the "Lindsay pamphlet scandal". Egan has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
